A blond, a brunette, and a redhead walk into a bar…

We all have those friend groups. Friends we’ve known for decades. Friends who challenge us to be big, bold, and audacious. Friends who make us think. Those friend groups are smarter, funnier, and more creative as a team than alone.

So it is for Candace, Maureen, and Liz. When we get together, magic happens.

In 2019, Liz was in town, and we three were catching up in person over (believe it or not) double shots of lemon ginger kombucha on the rocks.

The kombucha conversation soon turned to aging: the focus groups on aging and attitude that Candace was leading; Liz’s excitement and trepidation about her approaching retirement; and Mo’s widowhood and reinvention of herself as a children’s writer.

Candace looked 10 years younger as she shared what she was learning about the nexus of aging and attitude. And we wondered: Was this what being “over-the-hill” looked like? If so, great! After all, we three were rather enjoying the view from the hillside.

Bombarded as we were by the morass of popular opinions on declining health and quality of life, not to mention cultural norms and assumptions about aging, we were surprised by our actual experience of aging.

Was there data that supported the point of view that aging wasn’t a downward slope?

Candace quoted the research she'd uncovered that supported her point of view. "In my experience," she told us, “life begins at 70, and the experts back me up."

And voila! Mo, the youngest, was suddenly looking forward to turning 70.

“We really have something to offer,” Liz said. “I think we should create a platform where we can explore this new world of aging together and invite others along.”

Boom! Magic!

We raised our kombuchas high and toasted to our new enterprise: Love of Aging.
